What's included in children's dentistry?

Children’s dentistry treats patients from infancy to adolescence. Here at South London Dental Clinic, we’re not a pediatric dental office, but we have Family Dentists who oversee children’s oral healthcare.

Why is children’s dentistry important?

Children start to grow their teeth as early as 6 months. These teeth, called the primary or baby teeth, fall out over time. Still, they play an important role as they save space for the adult teeth and help your child prevent dental problems down the road.

Caring for your child’s teeth avoids decay and cavities, which are among the most common dental diseases worldwide. Your family dentist in London, Ontario, monitors the development of your child’s teeth and mouth and can detect potential issues early.

What you can expect at your child’s first dental visit

If you’re planning to take your child to the dentist for the first time, you’re probably wondering  what’s included in children’s dentistry. Here’s what you can expect.

  • Oral health exams. A first appointment is usually a quick one, with the dentist talking to the parent or guardian. Your dentist asks questions to learn about diet and habits that may impact your child’s teeth. They also perform oral exams to evaluate your child’s mouth. Depending on your child’s age, they may do a knee-to-knee position to look into your child’s mouth. Here, you and the dentist sit in front of each other in a knee-to-knee position. Your child sits on your lap, facing you, and then lowers their head toward the dentist’s lap.
  • Teeth cleaning and fluoride treatments. Your dentist may not be able to perform this on your first visit. But on routine appointments, oral hygiene cleanings and fluoride treatments are most likely included. After assessing your child’s teeth, your family dentist cleans between teeth and along the gumline. These areas are prone to plaque and tartar buildup as toothbrushes cannot reach them. After cleaning, your dentist may also apply fluoride on your child’s teeth to help strengthen the enamel and prevent tooth decay.
  • Gum disease management. If your child has gum disease, their dental visit may also include treatment. Mild gum disease is reversible with good dental care habits. Aside from cleaning your child’s teeth, your dentist also provides tips to minimize and avoid tartar buildup. If your dentist sees that your child may develop gum disease, they also offer advice on diet and habits, especially if your child is still drinking milk or formula from a bottle.
  • Some parents may find it more challenging to care for their child's teeth. If you struggle to brush your child’s teeth or are worried that their habits may affect their teeth development, your family dentist can guide and support you. They can provide counseling so your child can let go of bad habits or food choices that may harm their oral health.
  • Diagnosis of oral conditions. Children’s dentistry also includes diagnosing oral health conditions, especially those related to pre-existing medical conditions. During your first visit, your dentist talks to you about your child’s overall health, diseases or conditions they have, as well as medications they’re taking. It’s important to let your dentist know about your child’s condition so they can provide adequate support and dental care.
